Victoria Pier, Folkestone

Victoria Pier opened in July 1888.

By 1903 entertainers such as Lily Langtry and Dan Leno were bringing variety performances to the pier pavilion, although by 1907 the entertainment had developed into the more popular wrestling, films and beauty contests, with roller skating added a little later.

As is the case with most piers, it was sectioned in 1940 for defence reasons. A temporary bridge was built in 1943 to try and re-establish the pier, but a fire soon after wrecked the pavilion and put an end to its’ story.

What was left was demolished in 1954.

My painting is of Folkestone Harbour Arm.
